World Congress on Information Technology 2006 -- Austin, Texas (First Report)
This week I am attending the World Congress on Information Technology 2006 in Austin, Texas. Starting off was this Texas Sunset Party at the Oasis overlooking Lake Travis. I enjoyed the good company of Nick Yang and David Chung of Hong Kong Cyberport.
Getting down to business, on May 2, I presented Hong Kong's bid to host WCIT 2010, but we lost to a strong bid from Amsterdam, on behalf of Hong Kong Information Technology Federation. But I must thank the support from all our partners and supporters, who were on hand to support us in the meeting.
Supported by the Hong Kong government, we have a small booth presence in the exhibition area, where I was joined by Frankie Fong of OGCIO.
AMD sponsored the welcoming party, where seven-time Tour de France cycling champion and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong talked about how IT can help cancer survivors.
On May 3, Steve Ballmer of Microsoft and Paul Otellini of Intel gave keynote addresses to the audience. Both emphasized on the corporate citizenship programs their companies have engaged in to provide IT to those in the world who need it most. It was quite obvious from their presentations that the focus on the future for these companies have fallen squarely on the emerging markets of China, India and Africa.
